China announced retaliatory tariffs of 84% on U.S. imports on Wednesday, mirroring the additional tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump earlier in the day, escalating the trade conflict between the world's two largest economies.

 Trump's extensive "reciprocal" tariffs came into effect on Wednesday, hitting China the hardest, with its goods now subject to a total levy of at least 104%. The two nations have been locked in a tit-for-tat trade dispute, with Beijing consistently pushing back against each new tariff imposed by Washington. 

The trade war intensified further on Wednesday when the European Union declared it would begin imposing retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods starting the following Tuesday.
